Letter Regarding Changes to Mississippi’s Accountability Model

To the South Tippah Community,

For years, our district has worked diligently to meet and exceed the standards set by Mississippi’s accountability system. Earning strong ratings has been a reflection of dedicated teachers, hardworking students, supportive families, and a community that believes deeply in the power of education.

As we enter the upcoming school year, the Mississippi Department of Education has implemented higher performance benchmarks within the state accountability model. Because many districts across the state have consistently met previous targets, the criteria required to earn each letter grade have become more rigorous.

In simple terms, the goal line has moved.

This means that even if our students achieve the same strong levels as they have in past years, our district’s overall letter grade could look different. It is important to understand that this would not necessarily indicate a decline in performance. Rather, it reflects a change in how achievement is measured at the state level.

At the same time, we are incredibly proud to share that our district has once again been recognized as a Lighthouse Award recipient, an honor that highlights exceptional academic growth and achievement. This recognition belongs to our students who show up each day ready to learn, and to our teachers and staff whose dedication, innovation, and care make that growth possible. Their commitment is the true story behind any metric.

We remain unwavering in our pursuit of academic excellence. However, we also believe that education is about more than a single rating. While accountability scores matter, the health, safety, happiness, and well-being of our students, teachers, and staff will always be our highest priority.

We are proud of the work happening in our classrooms every day and deeply grateful for the continued partnership of our families and community as we strive to support every child’s growth and success in the South Tippah School District.
